Press release: Commission appoints two new Directors as it continues its change programme

Tracey Newman has been appointed to the new role of Chief Operating Officer. The new Chief Operating Officer role oversees the commission’s registration function, operational casework, First Contact function and website and internal IT systems.

Tracey joins the commission from a twenty year career in senior operational roles in the mobile telecommunications industry, in addition to having previously worked as Director of Dispute Resolution at the Ombudsman Services. Tracey joined on 13 April and is based in the commission’s office in Bootle.

David Jones joins the commission as Director of Corporate Services. He joins from Ordnance Survey where he was Head of Finance, and prior to that, in senior positions in the Environment Agency. A Chartered Accountant, David spent his early career in the City of London.

David joined the commission on 20 April with specific responsibility for Finance, HR, governance and facilities functions, splitting his time between Taunton and London. He will lead the Taunton office move which is scheduled to take place in late 2015, part of our continuing programme to reduce overhead costs.

The new Directors join as the commission is in the first year of a comprehensive three-year programme of change designed to help create a more efficient and robust regulator. This follows an allocation of £8 million ‘invest to save’ funding from the Treasury. The programme aims to deliver new digital services that make it easier for charities to interact with the commission whilst allowing it to focus more resource on higher risk work. This includes new technologies that will enable the commission to make smarter use of data to inform a tougher, more proactive risk-based approach to regulation.

I am very pleased to welcome Tracey and David to the commission. Their expertise will be invaluable and their arrival will strengthen our leadership base. The improvements we are making to how customers interact with us is a key part of Tracey’s new role, and she will be looking at all the ways we do this in order to improve their experience and make our operational functions more efficient. We continue to look at where we can be more efficient with our resources, and having recently moved our Liverpool office into smaller premises the Taunton office move will be another good example of reducing our costs further.
