Press release: New Charity Commission board member: Mike Ashley

Minister for the Cabinet Office, Francis Maude, has announced a new appointment to the board of the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

Mike Ashley has been appointed Charity Commission board member with responsibility for chairing the Commission’s Audit and Risk Committee.

His other current appointments include:

  • Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Audit Committee, Barclays
  • Vice Chair, European Financial Reporting Advisory Group’s Technical Expert Group
  • Non-Executive Director for Government Internal Audit Agency
  • Member, HM Treasury’s Audit Committee
  • Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’ Ethics Standards Committee

Mike was formerly Head of Quality and Risk Management, KPMG Europe LLP and has more than 20 years’ experience as an audit partner for several large financial services groups (most recently HSBC Holdings and Standard Chartered PLC) and for the Bank of England.

In announcing the appointment, Francis Maude said:

Mike Ashley’s experience of audit and risk management will help the Charity Commission’s board as it continues to strengthen the regulator’s effectiveness and protect public trust and confidence in charities.

Mike Ashley will be appointed for a 3-year term and will take up his post on 1 November 2014.

The recruitment followed the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice, and its principles of fairness, merit and openness. The Code of Practice requires the disclosure of relevant and declarable political activity. No political activity was declared in his application.
